What is "Legends of Signum"? (LoS)

Legends of Signum is a tabletop skirmish wargame. Unlike standard wargames, where lots of creatures fight side by side against another "army" - in the skirmish wargames, we have only a few creatures taking part in the whole battle, which makes a more "personal" connection to them.  Furthermore, while in wargames you don't really care about individual miniatures that fell in battle, simply because you have an entire army fighting by your side,  in the Legends of Signum skirmish wargame, each and every miniature is a unique and unrepeatable character with its own background, motivation, and reason to take part in this epic clash. And what is even more important, every character in Legends of Signum has its own unique abilities and skills, making it super valuable for its owners, and dangerous for the enemies. From ancient mages and heavy cavalry to rich merchants, faithful priests, and sneaky rogues.  From strong warlike orcs and peaceful elves to ancient Kitsune and the terrifying Undead army - this is only a very small part of all the races presented in the game. You can get acquainted with the whole list of the available races (or factions) on our website https://signumgames.com/store/ filtering by any available option.

And the most key part of all this is that only you decide which army you bring to the Battlefield. Although The Starter Set indeed has a set number of characters and game cards inside, it will become your basis, your very first steps in the Signum world as it helps you to get acquainted with the game basics, rules, gameplay, creatures and cards. But then, once you become a more experienced player, you choose your own path by building your unique battle deck and squad with tons of different playing styles, synergies, and strategies hidden inside.

Well, as you already noticed, it's time for a super brief Update, where we'll take a closer look at the factions presented on our KS campaign, and also quickly point out the main moments of the gameplay.

Where To Begin

For those who just joined the Signum world but don't really know where to start, the starter box would be the best option without any doubt. With the starter set, you get the basic set of characters, game rules, and cards - a fully tested and prepared set to start the game, as well as all the game components (dice, tokens, rulers, and all that kind of stuff). That's pretty much everything you need in order to make your first steps!

The game is basically a duel battle, with additional options of playing for three, four, and even one player. So if you want to start a standard two-player game mode, you have to find an opponent and both of you have to have battle decks and miniatures. It's not mandatory, by the way, for you and your opponent to have different factions as you both can play with the same factions - it's totally fine, but the game, of course, is much more exciting when precisely different factions face each other in this ultimate clash, right? :)

Have you already prepared your first battle deck? No worries! You will have one in the starter box. The battle deck is a deck of cards that you use in the battle. You can change any cards at your discretion in there between games, thus adjusting your strategy or removing unnecessary cards, but not during the game. The deck should consist of 20-40 cards and includes four different card types:

- characters

Characters are actually miniatures that you brought to the game in your deck. Each of them has its own game card that describes all of its characteristics and abilities, as well as summoning cost.  And yes, that's correct - you will have to draw that card to your hand first before you will be able to summon it to the battlefield. In the bottom left corner, you can see its summoning cost, we'll get back to it soon.

Basic stats are indicated by round icons in the centre: red - Strength, blue - Movement Distance (S, M, L, XL), green - Health.

Image 1. Character Card

 - spells

Everybody knows how dangerous spells are. Those are cards that have instant effect as soon as you played the card. There are tons of different effects such as healing, dealing damage, speeding up / teleporting you or your opponent's creatures, destroying terrains. In a few words - great opportunity to create a total mess on the Battlefield if you don't know how to use it :D So be careful!

Image 2. Spell Card

- relics

Relics are a kind of equipment for you hero. They also have different special types indicated by an icon in the centre of the card. Various swords, staffs, range weapons, cloaks, armours might significantly help heroes to attack harder, defend better, hide, or even survive. Don't underestimate it!
It can't be equipped on your characters, by the way.

Image 3. Relic Card

- tactics

"Everybody likes tactic cards, but nobody knows how to use them properly!" :D
Tactic cards are some sort of "secret" cards, so when you play a tactic card, your opponent doesn't know what it does until you reveal it. You reveal this card and apply its effect when some specific event indicated on that card is triggered. You can choose to reveal it right away once the trigger worked for the very first time, or simply wait for another fitting moment when it's triggered again - it's up to you.

Image 4. Tactic Card

What's summoning/playing cost?

The summoning/playing cost is the cost of a specific card you have to pay whether you want to summon a creature to the field or play a spell, etc. Usually, it requires Prosperity Points (your coins) and tapped buildings in your city zone.

Buildings are card type that forms your City. Those can be Barracks, City Hall, Library, Temple, Smithy, Shooting Range, Arena, and many many others. They can simply provide some bonuses to your characters if you tap* them and declare that action or you can tap them to fulfil the summoning cost requirements. Thus, you can summon that super intimidating cobra warrior on the example above (image 1) by tapping Barracks and Arena in your City Zone. If you have its card in your hand, of course!

Image 5. Building Card

To construct one building or another, Barracks, for example, we just have to look at its cost on the top left, pay those 2 coins (Prosperity) and place its card in our city zone. You can construct a new building only once per turn.

*"Tap" means that you activate that card and can no longer use it this turn.

Let's Get the Battle Started!

The battle itself takes place on the battlefield which is a game mat 60x60cm (a 24" square field). The first and the most crucial thing in the game is your hero - this is your leader that usually rules your faction, commands your soldiers, or is simply a key figure for your faction (yes, we do have our Lore). Heroes have their own cards which have much a bigger size compared to the standard battle deck ones - and they actually not a part of your battle deck.

The Hero card is way bigger than the character cards, but it's pretty similar in terms of abilities, flavour text etc. The visible difference (except for its size) is that on the Hero cards there is the Relic section, where you can see the types of relics the Hero can equip. Hence Kame-Onna, for example, is unable to equip a pistol and go taking everything down with it.

Image 6. Hero Card

The battle starts now! At the very beginning, you have an empty City Zone, three Prosperity points (coins), a miniature of your hero, which is adjacent to the edge of your battlefield side and a battle deck with 20-40 cards in there. At the start of the game, after you placed your heroes on the battlefield, you both draw 4 cards from your decks and mulligan.*

* When you mulligan, you can one time replace the cards in your hand that you don't want to have at the start of the game

The game is turn-based, of course, which means you and your opponent take turns alternately. Once you decided who goes first, the first player takes another coin and draws one card from the battle deck. You can either construct a building or skip constructing any building this turn, which gives you 2 additional Prosperity points (coins). From one turn to another, you watch at your Hand and battlefield and make decisions if you want to summon anyone to the battlefield or play some support cards (spells, relics, tactics), depending on the situation on the Battlefield. This is a very flexible strategy game, so the way you move your creatures, make tactical decisions, cover your creatures from opponent's archers or mages are super important, and every inaccurate step can ruin your plan and might cost you the game! You'll understand what we mean after playing a couple of games :)

The Factions you came across on this Kickstarter campaign

And now, let's finally take a brief look at the factions presented here on Kickstarter and the way you can play with them! (the full list of game factions is available on our website)

-Ophidian Alliance

An ancient race of snake-like creatures, capable of controlling minds.

They can literally take control of the enemy's characters and also prohibit any actions by the enemy's creatures. Their key abilities are Control and Concentration.

Control Х, activated ability, impact – the character can take control of an opponent’s character or minion. Choose a target for Control within XL to the character taking into account the Line of Sight; roll X dice – if there is the same number of Bullseye 3 rolled as the current target’s health, you gain control of the target until the end of turn. You can activate this character or minion this turn.

Concentration Х, activated ability — when the creature is summoned to the Battlefield, it receives X Concentration tokens. The creature with Concentration has: “<Tap>: gain 1 Concentration token”. The creature cannot have more than X Concentration tokens. You can spend the Concentration tokens anytime during your turn.

It's pretty tough for new players. But if you like slow, control decks, this one's for you.

 -Styx Undead Empire

The Empire of Undead, the fallen creatures that found a new "life". This is a very aggressive faction, and the main point is that you spam pretty weak creatures, such as zombie warriors and archers, and constantly resurrect them which might be super annoying for your opponents. They also have dark necromancers that can summon those zombies again when another "alive" character dies (to the same spot).

The key mechanic is built around Graveyard. The Graveyard is a place where the already played cards are stored. And the Undead Empire are the faction that can bring "dead" characters from there back to the Battlefield! You cannot fully get rid of them as the fallen dead zombies cannot die forever. They will be back sooner or later unless you find a way to defeat the faction.

It has a lot of simple mechanics which is great for new players.

-Vampires of Styx

The Vampires are obviously affiliated with the Styx Undead Empire faction. But they had enough power to create their own sub-faction. But still, you can freely mix up the cards of those two factions and it will be totally playable and fun!

The vampires do also have an ability to be brought back from the Graveyard, but while the Zombies arise and simply attack the enemies right away, the vampires are flying creatures, very agile, smart, fearless, and strong enough to fight back anything on their way.

Moreover, they have a very unique ability of Vampirism - it's the kind of lifesteal that heals Vampires if their attack is successful.

The deck is a bit harder than their allies from the Undead Empire starter deck, because here you have to be agile and quick, and don't let your creatures be attacked by multiple enemies or range shooters.

-Dwarves of the Bronze Kingdom

Dwarves (or gnomes, as you want) are natural-born inventors... and gamblers! And sometimes mechanisms they invent can collapse or stop working. So this deck is a mix of unconventional inventions/mechanisms and the games with Lady Fortune itself. If you're getting lucky - they are truly unstoppable. If something goes wrong this day - they'll fail without any chance to come back.

Their key mechanic is Steam Engine - which obligates you to roll a dice before the movement of a creature with this ability. And it can either give you a great bonus or do harm!

But those who like to test not only their skill but luck, and also find a way to save the game if you're getting unlucky (because it's a deep strategy game, after all, where anything can happen) - this deck is certainly for you!

-The Skagard Kingdom

Uncovered aggression.  What else you'd expect from harsh Vikings? The key mechanics are built around their synergy, buffs, attacking and defensive bonuses, and different types of attack.

Vikings are strong and tempered. The ones who love new challenges and don't afraid of anything - perfect match for newcomers!

-League of Plague Doctors

Combo-deck with some control. Plague Doctors are wandering mystery creatures who appear in areas where the outbreak or pandemic just happened. No one really knows if they fight the disease or spread it. At least, they state that they're just trying to save the world - and that's all we know.

This is a classic combo deck that allows you to control and destroy your opponent if you operate your resources correctly. If you like to think one step ahead and design cunning plans and tricks to defeat your opponent - this is your must-have deck!

The key ability is Disease (infect enemies so they are getting wounded every turn) and Summoning minions - plague rats that can easily sneak into any place.

-Guild of Black Sakura

Similarly to the Undead Empire and Vampires, the Black Sakura is a division of the League of Plague Doctors, which operate in the East (Kitsune are somewhere near!). That means you can mix those decks without any problems!

Another combo deck, but unlike the League itself, this deck is mostly focused on your own City and creatures.

The doctors like to heal others... for a price, of course, so every time the opponents are getting healed, you receive Prosperity points that you can use to build your City and even win the game because if you were the first player to collect 33 Prosperity Points and build all the buildings in your City - you are the winner!

-Clans of the Caledonia

Quick aggression (Rish aggro deck). Brave Celtic warriors and Scottish kings. This deck is pretty flexible because it can either rush your enemy during the first turn or conduct a slow, well-executed plan until the late game stage.

No matter if you like very aggressive or slow decks, this deck is for you!

The key mechanics:

Rush - the creature can move right away once it's summoned to the Battlefield.

Armour - absorbs damage.

-Guild of Monster Hunters

The ones who're going to save the world... as they believe! Fully equipped to stand against the worst and the most dangerous creatures in the world. If you're in trouble - call them!

Combo aggression is all you need to know about the Monster Hunters. Their guild is full of aggressive creatures with decent damage. They attack stronger if they are attack together. So synergy is a key point in this deck.

The key mechanics:

Shooting - range attack.

Executioner - the character chooses its victim (target), putting a hunter's mark on it, and from that point will have a bonus if attacks it.

Contract - you have to pay 1 Prosperity this turn to unlock some special ability, indicated in the text.

This is the best introduction to combo deck archetypes. So if you want to give combo decks a try and see how it goes - those guys are for you!

-Kitsune Clan of the Scarlet Forest

At last, the Kitsune clan - a group of ancient magical creatures from the East, and also the main exhibit in this KS campaign! :) Their deck is a special tactical control archetype. They make a lot of tricks, movements in order to confuse their opponents, so it's difficult even to get closer to "the foxes". And if somebody eventually did it and proceeded to attack, Kitsune will force the enemy to skip this attack or make them attack pretty weakly.

Key mechanics:

Movement.

Preventing attacks or enemy abilities.

Minion Summoning - this faction loves to summon and play with minions - those little foxes from Stretch Goals that we all love too :D Kitsune can not only summon them using their support cards but also some Kitsune creatures themselves are capable of it.

This deck is perfect for those who like tactical manoeuvres, constant movement across the battlefield. But be careful, they are weak in open combat.

Conclusion

And the game's win condition that we definitely have to point out: the main objective is to eliminate the enemy hero. The alternative goal is to collect 33 Prosperity Points and construct all the basic buildings in your city zone. All the further rules and mechanics you can read in our rulebook, which will be is included in your starter box (you can also download a PDF in the campaign description).

Another Stretch Goal has been Unlocked. Great News for the Backers with Duplicated Items!
over 2 years ago – Fri, Sep 10, 2021 at 02:51:58 PM

Dear Friends,

We have amazing news before the end of the campaign as we managed to unlock a new miniature in our Stretch Goal Rewards! This is another adorable fox minion which is going to be included in your starter boxes as a gift.

Image 1. New Stretch Goal Unlocked

The following news concern some backers from our previous campaign, who already purchased one of our starter boxes that included the Dice Tower and Coins. At the start of this Kickstarter campaign, we received numerous questions about those items because you were unable to purchase one of the sets without opportunity to skip Dice Tower or Purse that you already have.

And we've finally found a solution! Just take a look at this amazing miniature of the Kitsune Sorceress:

Image 2. New Gift Miniature that replaces duplicated items for the backers

All the Backers who don't want to receive the game accessories now have an opportunity to get this miniature instead! This option will be available on Backerkit (Pledge Manager platform) in a special survey, so please don't forget to follow our news and fill that out (you will be asked if you'd like to replace the accessories for the minie).

And keep in mind that it's going to be a Backerkit survey - not the one we send out on Kickstarter as we know that some backers might accidentally confuse them.

For people who would like to get the miniature itself, don't worry! It will be available for everyone in our Pledge Manager store as well!

Thirteenth Stretch Goal is Unlocked! The Quest Mode.
over 2 years ago – Fri, Sep 10, 2021 at 10:10:54 AM

We are excited to present you the brand new Game Mode. The Quest Mode is a single player or two player game mode where you fight as the Hero against the invisible force - Overlord. The mode is divided by two chapters - the first is PvE mode (Player vs Environment) in which you play against the game itself, and the second is PvP (Player vs Player) - where you play against another player.

Here you draw different quests and try to accomplish them as soon as possible to earn Victory Points. The Overlord is an invisible buy dangerous force that will do its best to stop the Hero. Be careful, it becomes even more dangerous if you do well on the battlefield. For instance, the more Victory Points you have, the more power has the Overlord, and the slower you’re attempting to accomplish the Quests, the more troubles you eventually face.

You can compete with your friends and see who has achieved more Victory Points and who was the most effective Hero in the struggle against the game. The PvP (Player vs Player) is the similar to PvE game mode but it’s even more dangerous as now another player takes a side of the Overlord, so if in PvE the enemy creatures had their special way of moving and attacking, now it becomes even more unpredictable.

Moreover, some quests can be failed and the Hero could receive a penalty for that. The goal of the game is to collect the necessary amount of Victory Points by accomplishing the quests and eliminating specific creatures. Good luck and see you on the Battlefield!
